You may quickly scoff at such a question and say to yourself, "Of course not!"
But take a moment to really ask yourself that question: Do you know more than God?
While you may still vehemently deny having greater knowledge than God, your actions may portray otherwise.
Do you try to control situations around you? Do you blame yourself when things don't always go as planned? Do you question your "luck" when something bad happens? Do you try to make things happen within a specific time frame? Do you use phrases like "I can't," "If only," and "What if?"
When life happens--and we all know it happens--we often try to understand it or control it or fix it or otherwise manipulate it to fit into the pretty box we've created our life to be. We cannot fathom that there is a much larger reason something happens. We are immediately drawn to the tangible.
For example, you've lost your job. At first, you may question your own actions: What did I do? What could I have done differently? Why did his happen to me? Then, you'll try to rationalize: It must have been from upper management. Maybe the company is making cuts. Maybe I was just not good at this job. Finally, you'll begin to accept it: Now what do I do? I have all these bills to pay. I have mouths to feed and a house to pay for. I have to find another job. I have to control this situation.
Now look at it from God's perspective and ask these questions instead: What about this job was preventing me from being my true self? Was I too stressed? Was I compromising my values and morals for this job? Was I unable to devote enough time for my family, faith, and self-reflection. Was the company in trouble? Was there more going on than I understood? And then, Now what do I do? I pray. I trust in God. I pray some more and listen to God's plan. I stop trying to control the situation and put it in God's hands.
Ultimately, whenever situations like this arise, we often try to control them. We feel that we must be in control and take charge. God wants us to trust in Him. God wants us to remember that He is in control. In Luke 12:22-26 we read: “
Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”
It's hard to relinquish all control to God and something that many of us struggle with on our journey in faith. Yet when we learn to give up control to God, amazing things begin to happen. Miracles we cannot understand. And that is when we can truly begin to see just how much God loves us. Just how easily God forgives us. And just how much God wants us to trust in Him.
So, next time you're facing trials and tribulations and you think you have to go it alone, stop, breathe, pray and give it to God. Ask him for help and watch His amazing grace fall upon you.
